VG-EXCEL - Vietnamese-German Center of Excellence on Infectious Diseases

Vietnam is a hotspot for emerging infectious diseases such as dengue, viral encephalitis, measles, influenza, and other infectious diseases. The burden of hepatitis B, hepatitis delta, hepatitis E and of antimicrobial resistances are well documented. The Vietnamese-German Center of Excellence (VG-EXCEL) was established to conduct clinical research on infectious diseases in Vietnam and in the ASEAN-Region. It aims to strengthen competences in the health care systems both locally and regionally.

VIETBIO – Innovative approaches to biodiversity discovery and characterization

Biodiversity-hotspots are mostly found in developing and emerging countries within the tropical and subtropical zone. Our knowledge about the species richness of those countries is, due to scarce capacity and resources, sketchy to date. More comprehensive data and information in this field could contribute to the long-term preservation of live-supporting systems and will open up opportunities to develop value-chains in bioeconomy.

RENOMAB Research Network on Melioidosis and Burkholderia pseudomallei

Research on pathogens with a natural environmental habitat requires interdisciplinary research structures to a particular extent. This project aims to establish a research structure in Vietnam which can help to unravel the ecology of the virulent environmental bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei and the epidemiology of the respective infectious disease melioidosis. This initiative combines German and Vietnamese expertise from very different disciplines, such as environmental and medical microbiology, infection biology, clinical infectiology, and infection epidemiology.

Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy: Progress Through East-West Exchange

Throughout the world, the prevalence of psychological and psychosomatic diseases is increasing. Several Asian countries are affected by this development to a great extent. In those countries, cultural and social developments progress rapidly caused by changes inside the respective society. Both cross-cultural research and international research networks create an opportunity to combine the strengths of Western psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy with traditional Eastern medical methods. Through this the scientists amongst the international project team are able to gain new knowledge about the medical treatment of psycho-social diseases.
