(non-EU) Eastern Europe and South Caucasus

The EU’s neighbouring countries are increasingly becoming an important focus of European politics. Along with the cooperation with → Ukraine, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) also maintains cooperative relations with other Eastern European and South Caucasus countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova).

Ukraine

The cooperation between Germany and Ukraine in the fields of science, technology and innovation as well as education has a long tradition. It has gained additional significance from the political developments since the 'Revolution of Dignity' in the winter of 2013/2014 and from the prominent role of Ukraine in the European Union’s neighbourhood policy.

Central Asia and Mongolia

Following a long tradition, scientific cooperation with the countries of Central Asia and Mongolia is continuously evolving and of great strategic importance to both Germany and the European Union. Accordingly, Germany is actively committed to intensifying and strengthening the cooperation of German and European Partners with Central Asian research infrastructures.

Iran

After the long-term sanctions against Iran were lifted by the European Union in 2015, the revitalisation and intensification of cooperation in the areas of education and research became the focus of mutual interest. German-Iranian research cooperation is based on a centuries long tradition.

Russian Federation and Belarus

The Russian attack on Ukraine is a grave breach of international law with no justification whatsoever. There must be serious consequences. By its actions, Russia has turned its back on the international community. For the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) this means that the existing, long-standing cooperation in science and research as well as in vocational education and training is being halted immediately. This also applies accordingly to the cooperation with Belarus.
