Australia

As an industrialised nation, Australia has a highly developed and wide-ranging science sector. The primary research target of the Australian government is closer collaboration between the public research institutions and the industry. Cooperation with Germany in education and research is moving forward in a positive way.

A long-standing partnership connects Germany and the People’s Republic of China in research and education, but at the same time China is increasingly becoming a competitor and systemic rival.

India

In the nearly 60 years since it was launched, the Indo-German science and research cooperation has enjoyed a perpetual increase in intensity. After the USA, Germany is by now India’s most important partner in this area. The 'Indo-German Science and Technology Centre' in New Delhi is Germany’s only bilateral centre of its kind in the world.

Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the partner countries of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Southeast Asia. The Scientific and Technological Cooperation (STC) with Indonesia started in 1979 and was significantly intensified following the tsunami disaster of 26 December 2004 through the joint development of a tsunami early warning system for the Indian Ocean.

Japan

Japan is one of the economically strongest and most technologically advanced countries in the world. Japanese basic research is regularly awarded Nobel Prizes. In addition, companies are generous in financing applied research and development. The basis of the bilateral research cooperation between Japan and Germany is an intergovernmental agreement from 1974. German research and intermediary organisations also actively support the cooperation.

Republic of Korea (South Korea)

In the last 60 years, South Korea has undergone a rapid development from an agricultural to an industrialised country and its investments in research and development by now put it among the leading nations of the OECD. This progress results in an ever more varied cooperation landscape between German and Korean research institutions.

The long-standing cooperation with New Zealand in Science and Technology has been developing over the last few years. The current focus of the cooperation lies on climate and energy research.

Thailand

Since 2017, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has regularly participated in the multilateral 'Calls for Research Proposals of the Southeast Asia – Europe Joint Funding Scheme'. This initiative suppports several projects in which German and Thai researchers cooperate. In addition, the BMBF funds a bi-lateral project to set up the joint research centre 'Ecoplate'.
