Reliable and accurate sampling of brain tissues

The treatment of brain tumors requires the extraction of tissue samples from the brain. The German-Russian research project examines how the risk of cerebral hemorrhage as a consequence of penetration by the biopsy needle can be reduced through the use of glass fibers, fluorescent dyes and imaging methods.

Development of a human breast cancer chip and establishment of a breast cancer cell bank in Moscow

Viable human breast cancer tumours have been cultivated on a “Carcinoma Chip” in order to test drugs on human tumours. These are intended to reproduce the conditions in the human organism that precipitate carcinogenesis and tumour growth by providing the tumour tissue with a continuous supply of nutrients through a microcirculatory system – similar to the human cardiovascular system.

German-Russian laboratory is researching shallow water ecosystems

What are the impacts of human intervention and changes to the climate on ecosystems such as the Baltic Sea? This is one of the questions investigated by the Ulrich-Schiewer Laboratory for Experimental Aquatic Ecology (USElab). USElab was founded in Rostock and St. Petersburg in 2011, and the project was completed successfully at the end of April 2015.

Development of yield and quality-optimised winter wheat for Russia

The aim of this project is to select new wheat varieties by combining Russian and German breeding material of summer and winter wheat. At the same time, the positive properties of the Russian varieties, such as winter hardiness and early ripening, will benefit the German breeding programme.

Development of a high-efficiency power supply unit for computers

Computers can often be quite loud, as their internal fan makes a noise. Employees at the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences (HTWG) and the Moscow Power Engineering Institute are working together to make these devices quieter.

Since 2010, the Federal Ministry of Research and Education has supported the development of a German-Russian network for the integrative analysis of complex metabolic networks between Bielefeld University and the Institute of Cytology and Genetics at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk.

During disaster relief operations, it is particularly important to obtain as quickly as possible data and information from the scene that will enable the rescue teams to ensure optimal coordination and to communicate situation reports. Due to the different radio systems of the individual aid organisations on the scene, this can often be difficult these days.

The effects of physical activity on the metabolic and genetic markers of health and neuroplasticity in older and elderly people

The German-Russian project was the first of its kind to conduct human trials on older and elderly people to investigate the effects of regular sporting activity on brain health and neuroplasticity, i.e. the ability of the brain to adapt to different requirements.
