Joint Workshop boosts German-Palestinian Research Cooperation

Around 80 participants from the Palestinian Autonomous Territories and Germany met on 1 March at an online workshop to exchange views on bilateral and multilateral initiatives of current scientific cooperation. Organised by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, existing cooperations were examined and multilateral network and funding measures in the EU area were presented.

With the aim of strengthening German-Palestinian research cooperation in the long term, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) together with the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) held the information workshop 'The way forward in Palestinian-German research cooperation' on 1 March.

During the half-day online event, after a welcome and scene-setting by the organisers, BMBF-funded bilateral and multilateral initiatives such as the Palestinian-German Science Bridge (PGSB) and the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) presented their networking and research activities with the Palestinian Territories. Representatives of the EU delegations in Egypt and the Palestinian Territories also explained the opportunities for participation in the European research framework program Horizon Europe - in particular the Mediterranean Initiative 2023-2024.

After a summary and outlook by representatives of both ministries, who particularly praised the opportunity for direct networking offered here, a 'market of opportunities' - three parallel breakout sessions on the funding and networking programs presented - rounded off the information event.

All in all, the workshop was a great success with about 80 participants. On a bilateral level, a platform was developed to strengthen and further develop future engagement and networking opportunities on both sides.
