Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)

As a European neighbourhood region, the CIS plays a particularly important role. Its member states have strong economic growth and traditional strengths in the field of science.

The International Bureau strongly supports the BMBF’s efforts to shape its strategic partnership with Russia and puts special emphasis on cooperation with Ukraine.

The other CIS members with which the BMBF is currently carrying out special cooperation activities that are implemented by the IB are Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova and Uzbekistan. Cooperation with the CIS, including countries not mentioned above, will continue to become increasingly important in the future.

The International Bureau is the national information and contact point for European and international funding programmes related to cooperation with partner organizations in the CIS.

  • Russian Federation

Cooperation in research and technology is a major pillar of the German-Russian relations. In April 2005 both countries signed a joint declaration, stating their decision to continue the expansion of the successful cooperation in this area. The agreement of 1987 including the scientific and technical cooperation (STC) was revised on 16th July 2009. In order to further strengthen this partnership, German Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan and her Russian counterpart Andrej Fursenko set up “The German-Russian Year of Education, Science and Innovation 2011/ 2012”.

  • Ukraine

Cooperation between Germany and Ukraine in the areas of science, technology, innovation and education can look back on a long history. After Russia, Ukraine is Germany’s most important partner country among the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This partnership is becoming even more important due to Ukraine's key role in the European Union’s neighbourhood policy.
