Multinational Organisations

The International Bureau is responsible for multinational activities relating to the OECD, UNESCO and GBIF. The IB supports the BMBF in the organization of OECD science and technology committees. On behalf of the BMBF, the IB prepares multilateral meetings and conferences and participates in them or carries them out independently.
The International Bureau of the BMBF (IB) is currently responsible for the following tasks at the multinational level:
  • Support of the BMBF in its cooperation with the OECD, in particular through the preparation of meetings of committees responsible for education and research, through the dissemination of OECD expertise, and through the organisation of joint BMBF/OECD events. Furthermore, the IB serves as a contact point in Germany for OECD research and education issues.
  • Support of the BMBF in all matters concerning UNESCO. This includes the creation and maintenance of an overview of relevant research programs, the development of a strategy for the integration of Germany in international projects with synergetic effects, and representation of the BMBF in international commissions and at meetings and conferences.
  • Support of the BMBF in the governing boards of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and in the European Research Expert Group
  • OECD - Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development

The OECD's main aim is to give its members a forum to help them tackle economic, social and ecological challenges. The OECD also tries to improve the Member States's understanding of new developments and trends and issues political recommendations.

  • GBIF-Global Biodiversity Information Facility

On recommendation and with the support of a working group of the OECD (Megascience Forum Working Group on Biological Informatics), the idea of establishing a world-wide information system on global biodiversity was seriously discussed in the years 1996 to 2000. Following approval at the ministerial level, an international memorandum of understanding went into force in March 2001. Germany has been a member of the Global Diversity Information Facility (GBIF) since February 1, 2001. By April 2005, the number of members had risen to 77 - 22 members with the right to vote and 51 associated organisations.
