Funding

In this age of globalization, research and education would be unthinkable without international cooperation. Contacts to partners from all over the world are of central importance for Germany's role as a key business location. On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the International Bureau supports German universities, research institutions and companies in the development of international contacts and networks.
The International Bureau (IB) is making an important contribution to the implementation of new Government initiatives, such as the High-Tech Strategy, which aims to strengthen Germany's position as an internationally leading research and innovation country. In cooperation with the BMBF's specialist departments and project management organizations, the IB initiates new collaborations with partner institutions in Europe, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Middle East, Asia, the Americas and Africa. It offers extensive information and advice on research cooperation with priority countries in these regions. The IB uses most of the financial resources provided by the BMBF to carry out preparatory and fact-finding measures for German universities, non-university institutions and small and medium-sized businesses that would like to get involved in international collaborations. In addition, the IB supports measures under the BMBF's initiative to advertise German research abroad and carries out further specific funding measures.

The International Bureau's funding opportunities:
  • Preparatory Measures for International Cooperation

The International Bureau provides financial support to German universities, research institutes and small and medium-sized enterprises for cooperation in science and research with partners from selected countries and for work in particular scientific and technical fields. This support is intended to help fund exploratory activities and the preparation of projects. Feasibility studies and pilot investigations may be funded as well. Applicants for funding should take note of country-specific thematic orientations and specific funding initiatives.

  • Funding Measures for Cooperation with Central, Eastern and South Eastern European Region

Bilateral cooperation in education and research with Central, Eastern European and South Eastern European countries (CEE/SEE) is marked by the creation of the European Research Area. The current bilateral cooperation models have the aim of establishing new forms of long-term cooperation with partners in this region, linking German research institutions to European partners on the basis of the traditionally good bilateral relations with CEE/SEE countries, and supporting the increasing European integration of the countries in this region.
